How do you write the letter l in Japanese?

There isn't a direct equivalent of the English letter "l" in the Japanese writing system. Japanese uses a different phonetic system. The sounds represented by "l" and "r" are often conflated and represented by the same character, "r" (ローマ字: r). So, depending on the word, the English "l" might be transliterated using "r" in romanization.
