What does the title Bt mean?

Bt is an abbreviation for *Bacillus thuringiensis*, a species of bacteria that produces proteins that are toxic to certain insects. These proteins are known as Bt toxins or Cry proteins.

In the context of genetically modified crops, Bt is used to refer to crops that have been genetically engineered to produce one or more Bt toxins. This allows the crops to resist specific insect pests without the need for chemical insecticides. Common examples of Bt crops include Bt cotton, Bt corn, and Bt soybeans.
