When did schooling children first start?
The history of schooling children goes back to the ancient world, with some of the earliest evidence dating back to the Sumerian civilization in the 4th millennium BC. Sumerian scribes were trained in specialized schools to learn how to write and keep records. Formal education in ancient Egypt and China began in the 3rd millennium BC, and in India, the education of children was also a religious duty, especially for the Brahmin caste. In the Greek and Roman civilizations, from around the 6th century BC, education was focused on preparing young men for civic and political responsibilities. The Roman Empire also established schools to train soldiers and civil servants, and in many places, education was linked to social class and privilege. Over the centuries, different cultural, religious and political influences have shaped the evolution of schooling, leading to the modern day system of education.
