Owl Elementary Art Projects

During the elementary school years, children begin to learn about the world around them. The study of birds, including owls, is a large part of the elementary science curriculum. If you are an elementary school teacher, present your children with art activities that relate to owls to further their understanding of these animals.
  1. Paper Plate Owl

    • Have your pupils turn paper plates into an owl. Make an owl body and head by gluing two paper plates together -- put glue along the rim of one plate and place the rim of the other plate on the glue. Cut a third plate in half. Glue the halves of the plate to the sides of the owl body so that the flat edges are pointing out; these will serve as the owl's wings. Glue googly eyes to the owl's head. Use an orange crayon to draw a beak and color in the rest of the owl with brown and black crayons. Children can also glue feathers onto the owl.

    Owl Puppet

    • Turn a paper bag into an owl puppet. Lay the paper bag upside down with the flap on the bottom of the bag facing up. Fold the ends of the flap inward, creating a triangle shape. Color the tip of the triangle orange, creating a beak for the bird. Make eyes by cutting two circles from white construction paper and color small black circles in the center of them. Glue the eyes above the beak. Have children trace their hands on brown construction paper and cut them out. Instruct them to glue the hand prints to either side of the bag so that the fingers are pointing out, making wings for the owl. They can color the bag any way they'd like.

    Heart-Shaped Owl

    • Make an owl that's shaped like a heart. Cut a large heart out of brown paper and a medium-size heart out of white paper. Have children glue the white heart on top of the brown heart. Glue two googly eyes on top of the humps of the white heart. Cut a triangle from orange paper and glue it between the humps of the white heart. The final product will look like a perched owl.

    Shape Owl

    • Children use different shapes to create this owl. Provide students with black construction paper and a piece of white chalk. Instruct them to draw an oval in the center of the paper; this will be the body. Have them draw an upside-down triangle on the top of the oval for the head. Two circles drawn on either side of the triangle are the eyes, and two circles drawn on the bottom of the oval are the feet. Have them tear pieces of brown, white and orange construction paper to add details to the owl. Glue brown and white paper on the owl for the body and eyes and use the orange paper to add color to the beak.
