In an introductory class, the French teacher could begin with a "bonjour," which is French for "good morning." You could then ask students about what they know about France. For instance, you could ask students if they know where France is located and ask them to locate the country on a map. Have the class engage in pleasantries using the French language, imagining themselves to be French children. For instance, they could greet each other in French and ask each other how they are doing.
A game involving a toy is a good way to get primary school children to engage in simple French conversation. Use a small toy that could fit into a desk, such as a monkey, and give it a French name, such as Georges. One child will have to leave the classroom while another child hides the toy. The child who left then comes back into the room and tries to locate the toy. He has to introduce himself in French and ask another child his name. If the seeking child introduces himself to the child that hid the toy, the second child would introduce himself, in French, as Georges, the name of the toy.
A guessing game provides an opportunity to help school children develop their French vocabulary. You should lay out some objects on a table, naming them in French. For instance, put out a notebook and say "cahier." Ask students to go through the objects and remember them. You should then ask one pupil to leave the classroom, while you remove one object from the table. The child then comes back and tries to find out which object is missing, naming it in French.
Another variation on a game of finding objects is effective for teaching children numbers in French. Ask the children to hide an object while one of them is outside the room. The seeker then comes back inside and has to locate the object. The others chant French numbers while she seeks the object. If she gets close to the object, the rest of the children chant louder. When she moves away from the object, they chant in a lower volume.
