How to Teach Proper Eating Hygiene in Elementary School

Children are sometimes described as sponges because they soak up new information. They also learn from role models, who may be parents or teachers, and from their peers. The world seems exciting at this age, and children are usually in a hurry to move on to the next thing. This means that they often overlook hand-washing and other hygiene measures. It may seem as though adults always nag them to wash their hands or brush their teeth. If you teach a child the reasons for all of these hygiene measures, then it may make a more profound impression.

Instructions

    • 1

Explain to the children about the common bacteria carried on the hands. Teach them about the bacteria carried in the nose and mouth. Ask the children to make posters about the importance of hand-washing. List the times they should wash their hands, for example, after using the toilet, before handling food, and before and after eating. Teach them about some of the common illnesses associated with inadequate hygiene.

    • 2

Use songs and rhymes to reinforce the importance of good eating hygiene. Ask the children to write a story featuring some common bacteria, such as streptococcus. Ask the children to write five eating hygiene rules, and to post them on the wall. Demonstrate the correct way to wash your hands. Ask them to sing a short song, and to wash their hands for the duration of the song. Many children merely run their hands under the water and consider the job done.

    • 3

Teach the children simple cooking, baking and food preparation. Supervise them while making cookies, making sure that they cover any cuts or scratches, wash their hands, tie back hair and wear aprons. Explain the importance of correct food storage. Ask them to draw posters to explain to the school cook about food temperatures, correct food storage and cooking hygiene.

    • 4

Read about a character called "Miss Manners." Teach the children according to what this character says about table manners, such as using a napkin, using cutlery correctly and asking permission to leave the table. Praise examples of good table manners and behavior.
