Classroom Ideas for Ages Five to Eight

Making lesson plans for children ages 5 through 8 can be a very exhausting but also very rewarding process. Most children of that age are receptive to good, simple lessons delivered in language that they can understand. Most children of this age also have short attention spans and limited ability to grasp difficult concepts, so the lesson must be short and directly relevant to their ability to understand the material. Lecturing doesn't always work with children ages 5 through 8, so hands-on activities are key.
  1. Searching for Shapes

    • This activity is appropriate for students aged 5 and 6 and is designed to teach them basic shapes. Give the students a list of shapes, including a circle, square, rectangle, oval and triangle. Challenge them to look around the classroom and identify one of each shape. The students can then share details about which of the shapes they spotted in the classroom. They can also draw the shape on a piece of paper as you mention each shape that they are to look for.

Show Children How Litter Hurts Wild Animals

    • Another good environmental lesson is to demonstrate why littering is harmful to wild animals. All you have to do here is put the child's hand through a six-pack ring from a soda, and ask him to try to get his hand or arm out of the ring. Relate this to what happens when a fish or bird gets one of these rings around its body, and then take the children out to pick up some litter at the school or park near you.

    Have Children Draw their Feelings

    • Children often learn their feelings from watching the facial expressions of adults. Having children draw how their feelings look to them is an excellent way to see what they are thinking. Providing art materials to 5- through 8-year-olds and asking them to draw what "happy" or "angry" might look like is an appropriate art activity for this age group.

    Copying Pictures using a Grid

    • Drawing a three-by-three-square grid and placing a similar grid over a picture is a way to teach children how to draw and how to break down artwork and transcribe or trace it. They can recreate the image one square at a time.
