What Is the Meaning of DOL Starters?

Daily Oral Language, DOL, is a curriculum aid which reinforces grammar and language in the classroom. Designed primarily for elementary students, DOL provides daily language practice in short lessons. A normal lesson has two sentences that have language errors, such as spelling, verb tense and punctuation that need to be corrected.
  1. Administering

    • Teachers will either project the sentence and have the students copy them down or distribute paper copies that the students make corrections on. DOL is an excellent activity that students complete while the teacher is taking attendance or during intercom announcements.

    Correcting

    • Students self-correct their work to identify errors and make changes. Have students use a red pen so that corrections are visible.

    Best Practices

    • Create a handbook that has all the sentences listed. Plan for DOL time during a transition such as coming in from lunch or at the beginning of the day. Project sentences on the overhead screen while the students are entering. Allow most of the students to complete the corrections. Make corrections on the overhead by calling on volunteers. Students are responsible to correct their work in red.
