How to Write a 4-Minute Speech Correctly for Grade 5

Speech writing is a common task required of elementary students. Speech is one of the most powerful tools a person has, and learning to speak clearly and concisely, delivering information in an appropriate and interesting manner builds strong communication and social skills for students now and later in life. If you have been asked to write a 4-minute speech, there are proper speech writing techniques that can help.

Instructions

    • 1

Brainstorm ideas. When writing a speech, getting started can be the hardest part, so begin by brainstorming and jotting down ideas. This helps get your creativity flowing and allows you to consider what type of information you want to include in your speech.

    • 2

Design a proper structure for your speech. There should be an opening, body, and end section, each with appropriate information for that part. For a 4-minute speech, the opening, or introduction, should be at least 30 seconds to a minute, and is one of the most important parts of the entire speech. The opening needs to grab the audience's attention and interest.

    • 3

Write the body, or the main section of the speech. Spend most of your time here, around two to two and a half minutes for a 4-minute speech. Include various facts and provide the audience with relevant information on the your topic. Use a conversational tone, short sentences, contractions such as "I'm" instead of "I am," and always use words that your audience will be able to understand.

    • 4

Write the closing section, or conclusion of the speech. Find a way to tie things up and have the speech end neatly without just cutting yourself off. Summarize the information offered throughout the speech, and include a few lines that will leave a lasting impression on listeners.

    • 5

Revise your work a few times, adding more information where needed and removing parts that keep your speech from flowing properly. Even in elementary school, it is important to revise your work a few times to ensure your final draft is the best it can be. You can also get feedback from your parents or a friend, who may spot problems or errors you may not have noticed during your own edits.
