Aside from being elected as the first President of the United States of America, George Washington is a war hero and historical figure. Born in 1732, Washington was Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, and fought in the French and Indian War. Washington was married to Martha Dandridge Custis, and he was elected to the office of President on April 30, 1789.
Since Washington is a well-known historical figure, it would be best for children to give additional facts about the former President. During his lifetime, for instance, Washington sought to intertwine his interests in military arts and Western expansion. In addition, Washington was inaugurated on Wall Street in New York; not in Washington D.C.
In December 1991, the 15 countries that made up the Soviet Union decided to become independent nations, bringing an end to a bitter Cold War and dismantling the strength of the Union itself. The collapse of the Soviet Union was a sure sign to the West that democracy was in, and totalitarianism was out. In addition, the end of the Union caused political, economic and military reformation all over the world. Instead of being viewed as a method of governing, communism was seen as a form of evil; a viewpoint that is expressed in politics today.
The Great Wall of China is a good public speaking subject for a number of reasons. First, the Wall is the world's longest human-made structure. Second, the Wall is a physical symbol of history. Built during the Ming Dynasty, the Great Wall was one of the first walls built in China. While many believe that the purpose of the structure was to keep individuals out of the country, it was actually built to prevent the entry of stolen goods. The Ming Dynasty wanted to discourage semi-nomadic people from entering the country with their horses, and spreading chaos by distributing stolen products to Chinese citizens. The Great Wall of China stretches over 4,000 miles in horizon from Shanhaiguan to Lop Nur.
Known as the largest living bird in the world, the ostrich can reach the height of eight feet, and the weight of 230 pounds. Although it is classified as a bird, the ostrich does not fly. Instead, the animal uses its long legs to run up to 40 miles per hour. The ostrich calls the savannas and semi-deserts of Africa home. The animals eat seeds, grass, bushes and other plant matter. Since the ostrich has no teeth, they swallow pebbles that help grind food, and travel in groups with other grazing animals.
