Equipment for Use in the Classroom

Classrooms can be as basic or as complicated as the teacher's teaching style requires. The basic equipment of most classrooms includes furniture, a board and storage systems. More advanced equipment can also be used to vary the teaching experience, such as televisions or computers.
  1. Boards and Board Accessories

    • A traditional classroom setup has a board at the front of the classroom for the teacher to write information on so the entire class can see. These boards can be chalkboards (for use with chalk and a duster), or whiteboards (for use with a marker and an eraser).

    Desks and Chairs

    • Basic classroom items are desks and chairs for the students. Students should be able to work comfortably at the desks, so they come in different sizes. Some teachers may find that large tables allow for more student interaction, especially when the class is working on cooperative projects. Tables also allow teachers to group students by ability in certain subjects, so explaining concepts can be tailored to groups instead of to individual students. Teachers also need a desk with drawers for storage and a comfortable chair.

    Wall Aids

    • Wall aids help to keep a classroom tidy and organized. Examples of wall aids include bulletin boards or educational posters. Students can easily refer to posters for information. A motivational poster, such as one featuring a regional sports team, helps build morale and lets students feel like their classroom is unique. Teachers use bulletin boards to pin up student work or to highlight events the students are interested in, such as science fairs or writing competitions.

    Storage Space

    • A cubbyhole shelf in the classroom can help keep students' belongings organized and avoid confusion as to who owns what. Each student has his own designated cubbyhole and items can be placed in the cubbies for safekeeping during the day. The teacher will need filing cabinets to organize her teaching materials by subject, and a bookcase to store relevant books. The teacher can also use items such as large plastic tubs to place student assignments in.

    Computers

    • Teachers who want their students to be familiar with using computer software can place computers around the classroom and organize a system for their use. The students can then use the computers for homework or project research and writing out reports.

    Audiovisual Equipment

    • A television and a DVD player are useful for teaching certain concepts or in media studies. The teacher may also want to use a projector and a projector screen to show presentations or videos to the class. A CD or music player can be used for smaller children to help teach music or languages through song.
