Fun Games for 1st Graders

Create a repertoire of simple but enjoyable games to play with your first-grade pupils. Use games during indoor recesses, as rewards or to end the day. Games that require little or no equipment can be set up quickly and played in the classroom or outside.
  1. Changes

    • Have the class sit in a circle. Choose one pupil to stand in the middle of the circle. Instruct this pupil to turn around slowly so everyone can get a good look at him. Have the pupil leave the room. While he is out, he changes one thing about his appearance. For example, he could untie a shoe or put his watch on the opposite wrist. When the pupil returns to the classroom, he stands in the middle of the circle. Classmates raise their hands if they would like to guess what has been changed. The pupil who guesses correctly gets to be in the middle of the circle for the next round.

    Mummy Ball

    • Have pupils sit on their desks. Give beanbags to three pupils. Tell the class that they will be tossing the beanbags to each other. Inform them that there are three ways to be eliminated from the game. They must sit down in their chairs if they talk, make a poor throw or fail to catch a beanbag that was thrown nicely. The last pupil sitting on her desk wins the game.

    Alphabet Game

    • Have the class sit in a circle. Choose a broad topic for the game such as animals or types of food. Pupils must think of words that fit the topic using each letter of the alphabet. Begin the game by naming something that begins with the letter "A." Go clockwise and have the next person name something that begins with the letter "B." If a pupil cannot think of a word, he can pass and the next person takes a turn. The game ends when the letter "Z" is reached.

    Wink

    • Have pupils sit in a circle. Choose one pupil to leave the room. While he is gone, choose someone to be the "winker." Have the pupil return to the room and stand in the middle of the circle. The winker begins winking at classmates. When they are winked at, they lie down on their backs. The pupil in the middle of the circle must determine who the winker is. Give him three guesses. Choose new pupils for each role to begin the next round.
