Elementary Art Projects With a Sports Theme

Combine an art project with a sports theme in your lesson plan. Art projects allow students to express their creativity and explore the different art media, such as paint, mosaics or color design, while sports give students a physical outlet for their energy. You could also add a more practical bent to the lesson plan as you add another class assignment to the project.
  1. Collage

    • Create an Olympics-themed collage for the classroom. For younger grades, such as kindergarten through second, give the students printable handouts to color and design. Some handouts include groups of rectangular boxes to make flags, medals to design or items to color, such as participants, skates or officials. Allow the higher grades to cut out photographs and computer icons and make their own Olympics collage out of the letter of the Olympics or on one large piece of art.

    Calendars

    • Design a monthly calendar based on the sports played in each month. Divide younger students from kindergarten through second grade into groups of six and give them two one-month pages apiece to design, while grades three through six design all the pages of the calendar. Have them draw a page to highlight the sports, such as ice skating in winter, swimming in summer or running for all year long. Another option is to combine a geography lesson plan about time zones with the art project, such as drawing the sports played in the different geographies as winter here is summer elsewhere.

    Flash Cards

    • Combine an arithmetic or spelling project with an art one. Students paint objects used to play sports on the back of index cards. Some objects to paint include a baseball, bat, football, soccer ball or basketball; more-artistic students could draw players swinging the bat or running with the ball. Another option is allowing students to paste their favorite players or teams logo on the back of the cards, while the front contains the math problem or spelling word.

    Mosaic

    • Choose a sport for a mosaic for the classroom or allow students to pick their own. Use the natural color of beans, such as kidney, pinto or black-eyed peas, and white or brown rice for the mosaic. Dye the rice for the other colors, such as yellow, orange and blue. Students design their picture on poster board and paint it by pasting on the beans and rice. Another option is to make one large mosaic for the class to work on, such as a baseball diamond with a player at bat, a soccer field with goal posts or a diver in a meet.
