Indoor Campout Activities for the Classroom

Camping out is always a fun activity for children. It means spending time outdoors enjoying a tent, sleeping in the open and all the interesting sights, smells and ideas that come with camping. When planning a camping adventure inside the classroom, it is possible to have a wide range of activities.
  1. Build a Fort or Tent

    • A campout is not complete if the class does not make a tent or fort. This is the sleeping and living area for the students. While the campout in the classroom is a pretend camp rather than a real camp, it requires the appropriate tent or fort. The teacher can bring in blankets to drape over chairs and desks to form the tent or tables can have pillows piled up to hide the "fort."

    Sing Camp Songs

    • Gather all of the students in a circle and start a singing around the "campfire" event. For better authenticity, turn off the lights and make the room dark, then use a flashlight or similar item in the circle to give the circle a campfire feel without the insects or potential frights.

    Story Telling

    • A classic part of any camping experience is the telling of wild, scary, or exaggerated tales. Telling stories is ideal for younger classes who might not have the real camp experience. Stories can range from scary to silly and fun tales. Have fun with storytelling around the circle. Alternatively, the students can make up their own tale by each adding a sentence to the tale in a circle. This is a fun way for students to make friends.

    Work on Camp Artwork

    • Students enjoying the indoor class "campout" can enjoy artwork done in class as well. There is a wide variety of crafts and art available for teachers to pick from based on the students' ages. For example, students can make finger puppets, murals or flowers. Artwork is a part of camp life and is appropriate for students enjoying the experiences in class.
