Elementary Math Games & Activities

Between lessons and taking tests, young children having a tough time with math may think it's all work and no fun. Take the stress out of math by engaging your students in competitive and creative math games that will have them solving math problems while have a good time with their peers. With all thoughts on winning the game, students will learn and have math lessons reinforced without even realizing it.
  1. Math Basketball

    • Divide the students into two teams and have them each form a single-file line on the opposite side of the classroom from the board. When you call out a math problem, the student in each line has to race to the board to solve the problem. The person who solves it correctly first earns one point for their team. The winner has the opportunity to score more points for their team by shooting a ball of paper into a trash can. Set up three lines that the shooter can choose to shoot from that will give them one, two or three additional points based on the distance. Students can use this strategically if they need a specific number of points to catch up or pull ahead of the other team.

    Math Bingo

    • Hand out bingo cards filled with numbers in the boxes and one free space in the middle. Instead of calling out bingo numbers, call out math problems and write them on the board. Students must answer the problem on their own and cover a box if they have the answer. The first person to have five boxes in a row, must call out, "Bingo!" and then recite the math problems to make sure they are all correct. The game continues if the student got any of the answers wrong.

    Unwanted Pennies

    • Have the students sit in a circle on the floor and give each student 50 pennies. Place a pile of flash cards with subtraction problems face down in the center, along with a bowl. The first student selects a card from the pile and reads the card. He must then answer the question on his own and put that amount of pennies in the bowl. The other students also do the problem and if they think that the student is wrong they can challenge them. Use a calculator to settle the score. If the the first student did in fact put the wrong amount of pennies in the bowl, they must take their pennies back and the challenger can add five pennies to the bowl. If the student was correct in the first place, the challenger must take their pennies out. The first student without any pennies wins the game.

    Sing, Act, Rap, Dance Math

    • For this silly game, place a bunch of numbers in one paper bag. In another bag, place the words Sing, Rap, Dance and Act in the bag. On their turn, each student reaches into the bag and pulls out a number and an action. Depending on what type of math you are currently studying, tell the student they must either sing, rap, act out or dance out problems associated with the number. For instance, if a student pulls out a five and the word "sing," you can say, "Sing the five times tables." Students giggle and laugh as the student has to sing-recite the times tables. If a student selects the number eight and dance, you could say they must leap do a ballerina twirl eight times.
