How to Do Elementary School Science Projects

Science is a mandatory subject in elementary school education, and is generally divided into physics, biology and chemistry. At an early age students learn science best from visually stimulating and practical experiments. These lessons vary from teacher-centered activities, whereby experiments are demonstrated in the front of the class, to projects which the students carry out themselves or within small groups. These projects form the basis of learning how to perform a scientific experiment and teach the child the essence of the scientific method.

Instructions

    • 1

Design the experiment. Plan what needs to be investigated and what experimental apparatus will be used. For example, a common elementary school project investigates how salt affects the freezing of water. This experiment is performed with a plastic bowl, water, salt and a freezer. Determine what parts of the experiment will be kept constant, such as the volume of water, and what parts of the experiment will be varied, such as the amount of salt.

    • 2

Build the experimental apparatus. For example, in the saltwater experiment, measure a fixed volume and put a known amount of salt in the water.

    • 3

Perform the experiment. For example, put the bowl with saltwater into the freezer for 2 hours.

    • 4

Collect the results. For example, open the freezer and check to see if the water has frozen.

    • 5

Write a simple report, which will consist of the following headings:

Introduction: What is the experiment about.

Method: Explain how the experiment was performed.

Diagram: Draw a simple diagram of the experimental apparatus

      Results: Write/display the results.

Conclusions: What did the results show?
