Science Activities That Involve Animals

Science activities that involve animals help to teach kids how science affects more than just people. Learn fun activities to show your students how science plays a huge part in animals' lives. Your students will enjoy doing hands-on activities while learning basic information about the world around them.
  1. Flash Cards

    • Use flash cards to teach your students about science. Show your kids flash card pictures of different animals. Give them key facts about the animals. Once you have gone through all the cards, show your students the cards again. Ask them to tell you a key fact about the animals. For example, a card of an aardvark would be explained as an animal that is a mammal and that likes to eat ants.

    Life Cycles

    • Show your students how different animals have different life cycles. Pick an animal or insect such as a butterfly. Teach your kids about how a butterfly starts off as a caterpillar and then transforms into a butterfly. Go into detail about the cocoon process of the insect. Keep a caterpillar in an enclosure in your classroom. This allows your kids to see firsthand how caterpillars change into butterflies. Other life cycle examples include bears. Tell your kids about how bears eat continuously in order to store fat for the months they sleep and hibernate.

    Museum

    • Take a field trip to a museum. Teach your students about why animals have different kinds of teeth and skin. In the museum, show your kids the different types of dinosaurs. Point out the different characteristics of the animals. Explain why some animals have sharp teeth and why others have flat teeth. For example, a meat eater has sharp teeth and a plant eater has flat teeth.

    Microscope

    • Teach your students how to use a microscope, to take a closer look at the skin of a snake or the shell of a turtle. Have your kids jot down in a journal what they observed in the microscope. Use this activity as way to compare animals. Have your kids note the color of the animals. Let them locate the eyes, mouth, legs and head of the animal. Each animal is different and your kids can draw a picture in their journal of what they've discovered.
