Math Problems for Kids in Grade 5

Getting a handle on fractions and x and y coordinates can take some practice. If your fifth-grader needs a bit of extra help with his math skills, or if he just loves to work with numbers, the Internet provides a variety of resources that offer educational games, worksheets and online problems.
  1. IXL

    • IXL provides online math practice for all grade levels. For fifth-graders, IXL offers more than a hundred skill-specific exercises, such as geometry, basic fractions, multiplication and graphs. The practice questions are presented in an easy-to-read format. The IXL website tracks the progress of the user and adjusts the practice questions accordingly to meet a suitable difficulty level. Signing up for a user account allows your child to track her progress. Account creation is not required to access the basic practice problems.

    Houghton Mifflin Test Prep Practice

    • If your child attends a public school, there's a good chance that at least one of his textbooks is printed by Houghton Mifflin. The online practice problems on its Test Prep site correspond to chapters in its fifth-grade mathematics course. Even if your child does not use a Houghton Mifflin textbook, these problems can provide valuable practice. The Test Prep site understands that sometimes a problem can be tricky. If a problem is answered incorrectly twice, the right answer is provided.

    Internet4Classrooms Math Skill Builders

    • I4C is a hub for education resource links from all over the Internet. The fifth-grade math section is broken down into four categories: numbers and operations, algebra, geometry and measurement, and data analysis. Within each of these categories are links to games, practice sites and other online resources that help to foster those particular math skills.

    HelpingWithMath Worksheets

    • If you'd prefer a pencil-and-paper means of practice for your child, the HelpingWithMath website provides free, printable worksheets. No account is required. Aside from providing worksheets for decimals, rounding, division and other age-appropriate topics, HelpingWithMath also offers resources such as a decimal chart and an online fraction calculator. The materials provided on this site are useful for both home-schooled and publicly schooled children.
