Many schools fly the American flag prominently in front of the school yard everyday. Involve the student council by rotating students every morning to raise the flag and every afternoon to lower the flag. Hold an initial meeting to teach the students about proper care of the flag, how to fold the flag and properly store the flag overnight.
In a typical year there are special events hosted in an elementary school building. Whether it is fun night, a special speaker, a science fair or parent-teacher conferences there are likely to be extended family members trying to navigate their way throughout the school building. Post student council members at the front doors to welcome guests and answer any questions there may be. Instruct a few members to stand at major hallway intersections to help guests find their way throughout the building.
Broaden the experience of your student council members by arranging a special field trip to an organization devoted to helping those in need. If a field trip is not possible, try to arrange for a representative guest speaker in person or using Skype to talk to your student council about the needs this organization addresses. Hold a fundraiser to help provide a financial donation to this cause. Charge a nominal fee for a school dance and have your students create an advertising campaign for the fundraiser dance. Rather than a dance consider a pop can drive if your state gives money for returnable cans, a change collection drive competition between classes or purchase school supplies in bulk and hold a school store during the lunch hour. When the fundraiser is complete take a picture of the student council members offering a check to the organization.
Students love to show off their work and parents enjoy seeing the display. Help your student council organize an arts and craft show. Create an advertisement campaign throughout the building by putting up exciting posters with the show details and send information to parents using the school newsletter. Pick an evening to have your student council members set up and display all the artwork. Invite family members to peruse the displays. Provide snacks such as crackers, cheese and punch for the guests. Consider using a theme such patriotism, an animal theme or art made from recycled materials.
