What Are the Top Private Schools in Metro Detroit?

Choosing a school for your child can be a daunting and, at times, overwhelming task. Your choice often is the difference between a quality or lackluster education. While the Detroit metro area has a variety of quality school choices, there are several private institutions that stand out.
  1. Saint Bartholomew

    • Affiliated with the Archdiocese of Detroit, the school serves children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school integrates Catholic values and ideals with its curriculum. In 2009, the Skillman Foundation, an education organization, bestowed the Good Schools: Making the Grade distinction on the school. The award is based on parent involvement, staff energy and leadership, a welcoming environment and dedication to academic success amongst all students. The seven acre facility, built in 1950, includes a parish which hosts the school's religious activities.

    Most Holy Trinity

    • Most Holy has been a part of the Detroit community since 1838. While a Catholic school, it boasts a diverse student body of various faiths. In 2010, its principal received the Archdiocese of Detroit's Outstanding Principal's Award. The school also has been featured in various publications, including the Detroit Free Press. The Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools accredits the school, which teaches students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

    Detroit Waldorf School

    • The Detroit Waldorf School is part of a network of more than 800 Waldorf schools worldwide. A Waldorf school incorporates art into every aspect of learning. The school, founded in 1965, teaches students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school has yet to experience any safety or security issues, including violence or drug use. Many students have been recognized for music, writing, speaking and sports in national and statewide competitions. The school also promotes environmentally friendly practices as a designated green school.

    Cornerstone

    • Cornerstone, founded in 1991, educates children in kindergarten through eighth grade. About 95 percent of Cornerstone students go on to graduate high school. In 2010, the Excellent Schools Detroit coalition ranked area public, private and charter schools based on student testing results. Cornerstone ranked first, earning 97.9 percent in both reading and math results, the highest in Detroit. The school also received International Standards Organization certification in 2005, the only urban school to receive such distinction.
