Create a table with five columns. Give your table a title that describes the assignment such as "Story Rubric."
Determine the criteria you will be using to mark the assignment and create a row for each criterion. The mark for a writing task could be based on content, punctuation and spelling. Write each criterion in a box in the left column of the table, beginning with the most important.
Add details to further describe each criterion. For example, punctuation could be defined as correctly using commas, periods, question marks and exclamation points.
Print your marking scheme across the top row of the table, beginning with the lowest mark. For example, you could use descriptors such as "poor," "fair," "good" and "excellent." Picture symbols such as ice cream cones with one, two, three and four scoops are easily understood by second-graders.
Describe what "excellent" looks like for each criterion and print the descriptions in the last column. For example, excellent use of punctuation could be described as "uses all punctuation correctly."
Fill in the last three columns for each criterion. For example, the remaining descriptions for use of punctuation could be "uses most punctuation correctly," "uses some punctuation correctly" and "uses little punctuation correctly."
