Third Grade Activities for Learning Common and Proper Nouns

A strong working knowledge of grammar is essential for understanding the English language. The noun is one of the first parts of speech that students learn. By third grade, a student should be able to identify common nouns and proper nouns. A common noun is non-specific, such as: man, store, book, parade. A proper noun is specific, such as: Mr. Smith, Ikea, Swiss Family Robinson, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

    • Have the students form a circle. Designate one student to start the game by naming a common noun and calling out the name of another student. The student whose name is called must respond with a proper noun. If he is not correct, he must be seated. If he is correct, he then calls out a common noun and another student's name. Continue until one student is left standing.

    Think Fast

    • Call out a common noun, such as "store." Set the timer for one minute. Have students write as many proper nouns as they can on notebook paper. You can play this game in teams and keep score for the most correct answers.

    In the Bag

    • Write common and proper nouns on slips of paper. Put them in a bag and have each student draw one out and identify it as a common or proper noun. Have each student then go to the board and write a corresponding common or proper noun.

    Tic Tac Toe

    • Using a pre-designed SMART Board tic tac toe game, divide the class into teams and have them identify common and proper nouns. When a team member gives a correct response, have her go to the SMART Board and place her team's marker on the grid.
