Plan Ideas for Teaching Alphabet Sounds & Numbers

Letter sounds and numbers are introductory material that students learn at the very beginning of their educational careers. However, these two components are crucial since they will be major building blocks for many other lessons during school, but also later in the work force and in life in general as well.Letter sounds and numbers are introductory material that students learn at the very beginning of their educational careers. However, these two components are crucial since they will be major building blocks for many other lessons during school and also later in the workforce and in life as well.
  1. Introducing Letters

    • Write the letter on the board and tell the students what sound it makes. Ask students to repeat the sound, and continue having them repeat it until everyone is saying it correctly. Tell the class which words start with this particular sound and have them offer their own suggestions for words as well. Write several other letters on the board, along with the letter of discussion. Point to each letter and instruct the class to make the appropriate sound when the letter appears and to not speak at all when you point to the wrong letter.

    Enhancing Letter Sound Study

    • Read a book about a title character with an unusual name, such as "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes. Once the reading has ended, ask students what they notice about the sounds in the character's name. For example, a student named Christine might notice that the names start in the same way. Have students write their own names on an index card. Ask them to share what they notice about the different letter sounds in their own names with the rest of the class.

    Introducing Numbers

    • Select manipulatives that have to do with an upcoming holiday or season. For example, use plastic seashells if summer is near, leaves in the fall or chocolate eggs when Easter is approaching. Write the numbers 1 through 10 on index cards. Say each number, show students the card and then place the appropriate number of manipulatives behind the card. Ask for student volunteers to help you with the activity or complete it twice, allowing students to do the placement the second time.

    Enhancing Number Study

    • Distribute chocolate chip cookies to the class, after checking with the school and parents for any possible allergies or food problems. Tell the students to break the cookies apart. They may eat the cookie, but must leave the chocolate chips. Students should then count the chocolate chips. Every time they count 5, 10 or 15 chips, for example, they need to put them in a small cup. Use this lesson to teach students how to count by fives.
