Taking a survey and graphing the data is a great project for 8-year-old students. The students can create a survey on a variety of topics including birthdays, favorite foods, pets and other subjects that are interesting to younger students. Once the topic of the survey is selected, the students can poll classmates to collect data. Students can use the data to create a bar graph to display the information. Eight year olds will enjoy the opportunity to choose topics, interact with other students and present their information.
Researching a mathematician will help 8-year-old students to make the connection between the subject of math and those who make it a profession. Students can choose a historical or current mathematician and research his life and accomplishments. After completing research, the students can create a report or display to report their findings. An extension to this project is to allow students to create an oral presentation for their classmates.
Students can write a story based on a math concept and create a book to read to others. Examples of appropriate topics for 8 year old students are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. Advanced students can even write a story using math problems as the basis of their plot. Once they choose a topic, they can create an outline that describes the plot of the book. After the story is written, the students can create a book to publish the final draft. The student can illustrate the book as a way to show their creativity. Once the book is published, the students can read the book to others, or allow others to read the book to themselves.
Eight-year-old students love creating games. Students choose a topic to focus the game on and determine the objective of the game. Games topics can include addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. Students can use the objective of the game as a way to move pieces and answer questions. After the objective is chosen, the students create a game board and game pieces. They need to create rules for the game that are easily understood. Once the game is completed, students will enjoy playing the game with their classmates.
