Theme boards for the first grade at HMH include celebrations for government holidays such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Earth Day and Veteran's Day, Theme boards for King Day include first-grade word-search games with words from the "I Have a Dream" speech, as well as poster projects and quizzes. President's Day activities include a coin and president match-up game, and Memorial Day activities include an illustrated Pledge of Allegiance. Labor Day projects include a future career interests booklet, Earth Day activities teach kids about tree ecosystems and the Veteran's Day board has activities such as coloring pages of the Statue of Liberty and a veteran wreath project.
HMH also has theme boards for first graders based on monthly themes such as Women's History, Black History and Nutrition months. The Women's History activities for first graders include word search puzzles and women's history quizzes. The Black History Month projects include a word search puzzle for words in the "I Have a Dream" speech as well as a project to make a Harriet Tubman postage stamp. Nutrition Month includes activities such as making place mats with healthy food pictures and interactive food games. Several other monthly theme boards include boards for Math Education Month, Zoo and Aquarium Month and National Poetry Month.
Seasonal theme boards from HMH include summer, fall and winter activities. First-grade summer activities include a camping equipment game and summer poetry prompts. Fall activities include leaf rubbings and a cornucopia art project. Winter activities include "winterscape" art projects and a winter memory book. This site also has some theme boards based on broader themes such as bugs, explorers, music, oceans, weather, plants, safety, travel, space, apples and computers, each with first-grade activities included.
Holidays such as Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, July 4, Ramadan and the New Year also have their own theme boards with first-grade activities at HMH. The New Year theme board includes the learning of "Auld Lang Syne" and creation of calendars. July 4th projects include patriotic games and presidential crafts projects. Ramadan activities include a mosque mobile, Ketupat greeting cards and Islamic image coloring pages. Christmas projects include snowmen made from envelopes and pasta ornaments and Hanukkah activities include window decorations and homemade holiday postage stamps. Kwanzaa activities include unity cup decorations and bookmarks.
