Elementary Webquests on Life Cycles

A WebQuest is an online research lesson with an introduction, tasks and a expected conclusion about a chosen topic, found at Webquest.org. Elementary students work in teams to complete the given tasks and find online answers to questions. Each WebQuest will also have a rubric to help the students evaluate their work. Life cycle WebQuests have been created as a part of educational programs for many large businesses and universities, including AT&T, the John Hopkins University and the University of California at Irvine.
  1. Life Cycle of a Snake

    • The "Life Cycle of a Snake" is a WebQuest designed by Cecilia Monta using Filamentality, the AT&T fill-in-the-blank online tool for WebQuest, and many other Internet searches. In the WebQuest introduction, students learn about what baby snakes eat and what kind of habitats in which they live. Students on the teams are all junior herpetologists for this WebQuest; their tasks are to learn vocabulary words about snakes, create posters and make habitats for them. The process for finding this information is researching websites provided by

WebQuest. The conclusion for this WebQuest is that students will learn about the important role that snakes have in our world.

    Monarch Butterflies Life Cycle

    • The "Monarch Butterflies: Flying Towards Survival" WebQuest from the John Hopkins University technology academy website was created by Yvette Mass. In the introduction for this WebQuest, the citizens of "Best Town" are concerned about what will happen to the Monarch butterflies in their area as their town continues to grow. Each team of students will be lepidopterist, conservationist, horticulturist and reporters. Their tasks include learning about the butterflies' life cycle, migration patterns and beneficial plants. The reporter will also write an article about the town's concerns for the Monarch butterflies. The process for finding information is researching websites. The conclusion that students learn learn is that all living creatures are interdependent.

This WebQuest introduction is about salmon and their amazing journey as tiny eggs to full grown adults. It discusses why the salmon life cycle is unique and important for the habitat that surrounds them. The task for each team is to answer questions like:

What are the different types of Alaskan salmon and their stages? And, what obstacles do salmon face to reach their spawning location? The process for finding these answers is website research, Venn diagrams, games and many excellent photos of salmon. The conclusion for this WebQuest is that the students will learn how many obstacles Salmon have to overcome --- including animal predators, human interference and complete exhaustion --- before they can reach their final destinations.

    Life Cycle of a Frog

    • "It's a Frog's Life" is a University of California, Irvine Summer Science Institute WebQuest created by Kristen Liesch. The introduction discusses the metamorphosis of frogs, beginning as tiny eggs to adults. The tasks and processes that the team members carry out includes observing and recording weeks for the development of frogs, including their gills, legs, tails and arms. They will also label a diagram of the life cycle of frogs and complete word searches, puzzles and trivia games about frogs.
