Activities for the Life Cycles of Animals

Children can enjoy learning that different animals have different life cycles; demonstrate these cycles through a few educational projects. These life cycle activities will teach students about these differences by allowing them to see the types of life cycles firsthand.
  1. Amphibian Life Cycles

    • Children can learn about amphibian life cycles by creating the life cycle chart of a frog. Paint half of a paper plate with blue acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry completely. On the blue side of the plate, draw a few small circles with a black marker. Draw a dot inside each of the circles. These will be frog eggs inside water. Between the blue side and the white side of the plate, draw an oval with a tail. This will be the tadpole, which spends half of its time in the water and half on land. On the white side of the plate, draw a frog. The frog will spend its time on land.

    Insect Life Cycles

    • Students can demonstrate an insect's life cycle by creating a display showing the life cycle of a butterfly. Draw two perpendicular lines on a paper plate. In one section, draw a leaf with small dots on it. These dots will be the butterfly eggs. The eggs are the first stage in the life cycle of a butterfly. In a different section, draw a caterpillar. The caterpillar, or larva, is the second stage in the life cycle of a butterfly. In another section, draw a chrysalis hanging from a leaf. The chrysalis, or pupa, is the third stage in the life cycle of a butterfly. In the last section, draw a picture of the final stage in a butterfly's life, a beautifully colorful butterfly.

    Fish Life Cycles

    • The life patterns of fish can be shown by creating a fish life cycle chart. Divide a paper plate into five sections using a marker. In the first section, draw eggs. In the second section, draw alevin, or tiny fish with flared gills. In the third section, draw small fish, or fry. In the fourth section, draw medium-sized fish, or smolt. In the fifth section, draw large adult fish.
