Artemis Fowl English Projects

"Artemis Fowl" is a series that the author, Eoin Colfer, describes as "'Die Hard' with fairies." In the series, boy genius and mastermind criminal Artemis Fowl discovers the existence of a highly technological world of fairies that has been hiding from its human counterparts. The series makes for great juvenile fiction reading and lends itself to many classroom activities for students from grades four to eight.
  1. Wanted Posters

    • At various points in the series, different characters are high on the "most wanted" list of the LEPrecon. Have students make a wanted poster for any one of these characters, including Artemis Fowl, Mulch Diggums, Captain Holly Short, Opal Koboi, Briar Cudgeon, Leon Abbot, Damon Kronski and Turnball Root. The poster should include a description and picture of the person, his "crimes" and identifying characteristics or a quote by that character.

    Gnommish Translator

    • Assign a one-paragraph summary of "Artemis Fowl" that is to be between 50 and 100 words. However, students must write this summary in Gnommish. The symbols are available both in the book and on the "Artemis Fowl" official website. Once the paragraphs are written, have students trade papers and translate each other's work. Another variety on this assignment is to write classroom information on the chalkboard using Gnommish and give students time to translate it.

    Movie Casting

    • Tell students that they have been hired to cast a movie based on one of the "Artemis Fowl" books. They have to cast the entire book using either actual professional actors or people from within the school. If you do the latter, you may wish to exclude certain characters, such as Mulch Diggums, that could lead to hurtful choices or teasing. Each casting director must submit a cast list and a one-paragraph justification for why that person is the best fit for the character.

    Map Making

    • Put a world map up on the bulletin board and use push pins to mark every place that one of the characters in the book visits throughout the course of the novel. Assign a different place to each student. Have them create a travel brochure for that location. The target audience for the travel brochure should be fairies. Tell students to write enticing copy that emphasizes the natural sights of each location.
