School Project Ideas on the Seasons

The changing seasons provide an opportunity for learning through creative expression. Individual artwork creations or collaborative displays can be used to bring the outdoors into the classroom. Discuss the elements that define each season as students work on seasonal projects and use the completed displays to spark lessons about seasonal activities, nature, weather and the environment.
  1. Winter Snowman Project

    • Students can make their own snowmen out of craft foam planter balls. Each student will need one large, one medium and one small foam ball. Slice the bottom off each large foam ball to create a level surface on which the snowman can stand. Insert a large toothpick into the center of the large ball. Push down so that half of the toothpick pierces the large ball and half remains pointed out of the ball. Place the medium ball onto the remaining end of the toothpick. Push down until it meets the large ball. Pierce the top of the medium ball with another toothpick, push halfway into the ball, and push the small foam ball onto the toothpick until it meets the medium ball. Insert pipe cleaners into the sides of the medium balls to form the stick arms. Have students decorate their snowman with a variety of craft supplies. Some decorative suggestions include button eyes, candy corn noses and ribbon scarves.

    Spring Flower Garden Project

    • Celebrate spring with a classroom flower garden. Bring a planter box with a foam block insert into the classroom. Have the students cover the foam with colorful plastic grass. Give each child a card stock cutout of a flower. Decorate the flowers with items such as nontoxic paint, markers, crayons, glitter and beads. Tape the flower to the top of a barbecue skewer. Give each student two leaf-shaped cutouts. Have students write their name on one leaf and their favorite thing about spring on the other. Attach these leaves to the flower stems (skewers). Push the bottom ends of the skewers into the foam block to "plant" the flowers in the garden.

    Summer Sand Art Project

    • Create summer-themed artwork with shoe box canvases and sand "paint." Purchase colored sand from the craft store. Ask each student to bring in a shoe box lid. Have the students paint their names on the tops of the shoe box lids with nontoxic paint. Cut black construction paper to fit and glue into the insides of the box lids. Have students use the tip of a glue bottle to draw their design with glue. Sprinkle colored sand over the glue. Allow to dry and shake off excess sand. Embellish with seashells and flower petals.

    Autumn Tree Project

    • Bring a small, potted tree into the classroom. Provide each student with card stock cutouts of leaves. Have them write their names and their favorite thing about fall on their leaves. Color and decorate the leaves with items such as nontoxic paint, crayons, glitter and fall-themed stickers. Punch a hole in each leaf and feed a small length of ribbon through the holes. Tie the ribbon into a loop and hang each leaf on a tree branch.
