"California Reading" is an adopted English text for fifth graders in California, published by Houghton Mifflin. The text includes all of the required elements, along with novel units with lesson plans provided. The students have a workbook to complete their writing, comprehension skills, vocabulary development and weekly spelling lists.
"California Excursions" is another text approved for fifth grade in California, also published by Houghton Mifflin. This excursion program meets all of the required guidelines. The highlight of this program is that concepts are introduced and mastered before moving on. Concepts are generally worked on for two weeks, then reviewed for a week before moving on to other concepts in the reading class.
"Reading Street" is published by Scott Foresman for fifth grade California English classrooms. The emphasis in this program is ongoing assessment of progress for each student and a specific plan for running small groups in the English classroom. The textbooks contain engaging literature and motivating ways to teach lessons.
"Imagine It!" is published by SRA McGraw-Hill and is an alternative to the typical English texts.The program has an emphasis on using technology to engage students. The program includes motivating stories, along with daily writing exercises. There is also a 30-minute program built into the system to aid English language development students.
