What English Texts Are There for 5th Grade California Standards?

Textbooks adopted in the state of California for English classes meet strict guidelines in every grade-level, including the fifth grade. The textbooks are aligned with the California State Standards for Reading Language Arts. The texts adopted "emphasize increased vocabulary, oral reading fluency, and writing," according to the California Department of Education. The selected books also are organized in sequential order, have an assessment component, are accessible to all students and provide instructional planning support for the teacher for each lesson. Currently, there are four series that are approved for the fifth grade English classroom in California.
  1. California Reading

    • There are almost 1/2 million fifth grade students in California using one of these four English textbooks.

"California Reading" is an adopted English text for fifth graders in California, published by Houghton Mifflin. The text includes all of the required elements, along with novel units with lesson plans provided. The students have a workbook to complete their writing, comprehension skills, vocabulary development and weekly spelling lists.

    California Excursions

    • "California Excursions" is another text approved for fifth grade in California, also published by Houghton Mifflin. This excursion program meets all of the required guidelines. The highlight of this program is that concepts are introduced and mastered before moving on. Concepts are generally worked on for two weeks, then reviewed for a week before moving on to other concepts in the reading class.

    Reading Street

    • "Reading Street" is published by Scott Foresman for fifth grade California English classrooms. The emphasis in this program is ongoing assessment of progress for each student and a specific plan for running small groups in the English classroom. The textbooks contain engaging literature and motivating ways to teach lessons.

    Imagine It!

    • "Imagine It!" is published by SRA McGraw-Hill and is an alternative to the typical English texts. The program has an emphasis on using technology to engage students. The program includes motivating stories, along with daily writing exercises. There is also a 30-minute program built into the system to aid English language development students.
