At this level, the focus is on memorizing basic addition and subtraction facts. Some websites feature printable worksheets with number sentences that require students to fill in missing blanks for adding and subtracting one- and two-digit numbers. Some worksheets use very basic word problems that engage students in a story, followed by simple addition or subtraction problems that ask questions related to that story.
Activities that teach students how to tell time in a variety of contexts include asking them to draw hands on a blank analog clock to show the correct time that matches a digital format. Another common activity is having students show what time it is on an analog clock after specified periods of time have passed (setting the clock, for example, to 6:05, and then asking the student to move the hands to the time that is 15 minutes later). Converting a.m. and p.m. times to a 24-hour format is another popular activity.
Activities involving decimals include finding different ways to represent decimal proportions to help students understand what they mean. For example, an activity may present a student with a series of circles and ask her to mark off 0.25 or 0.75. of a circle. Number lines and dials with marks for different points between 0 and 1 are other ways to represent these concepts.
Some websites offer printable shapes that you can cut out for your students. You can then ask them to categorize the shapes according to different parameters. For example, you can ask them to organize the cutouts by shape (i.e., all triangles, all squares, etc.), by even or odd number of sides, by acute angles, by regularity of shape (all sides congruent), etc.
