How to Move a Decimal to the Tenths Position

Before becoming decimals, these numbers stand for fractions. A fraction such as "9/10" stands for "0.9," or nine-tenths. The tenth position in decimals is one space right of the decimal point. When you have a long decimal in math, you move the point by multiplying or dividing by powers of 10. To move to the tenths position, you only need to know how to multiple a decimal by a whole number.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the original decimal. For example, start with .0004.

    • 2

Count the number of spaces starting at the decimal point to the right and ending where you want to place the decimal point. In this example, count to the tenths space, which is one space from the decimal point.

    • 3

Multiply by a power of 10 for each space that you count. In this case, multiply .0004 by 10 to get .004, moving the decimal point one space to the right.
