Second grade music students learn to read and notate music. This includes recognizing whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes and rests, and performing simple rhythm patterns using these notes and rests. They will also be able to read and perform simple pitch patterns using syllables like do-re-mi.
Students in second grade spend time listening to music, analyzing what they've listened to and describing what they've heard in terms of ascending and descending melody, and even and uneven rhythm patterns. They will also be able to identify simple patterns in music like AB/AB and AB/ABA patterns, and identify brass, wind, string and percussion instruments by both sight and sound.
Second graders apply music skills by singing age-appropriate songs from memory and playing repeated rhythms on instruments in the classroom accurately. They will also be able to create simple compositions using their voices and classroom instruments.
Second grade music goals include teaching students to sing simple songs and play simple instruments from other cultures. They also work on using correct musical terms when describing songs and instruments, moving in rhythm and tempo and using appropriate behavior during a live musical presentation.
