Fun Activities With Negative Numbers

A negative number is any number that is less than zero. Negative numbers represent a decrease in assets or are used to describe a very cold temperature on a scale that goes below zero, such as on a thermometer. Negative numbers usually have a minus sign in front, such as "'6." Games can be used to help you understand negative numbers a little bit better.
  1. Order Game

    • You can create a game in which you will place positive and negative numbers in order. This will help you understand how negative numbers are less than zero. You can write out positive and negative numbers on blank three-by-five index cards. Shuffle the cards and then lay them on a flat surface to put each number in order from highest to the lowest numbers.

    Negative Clue Temperature Game

    • You will need a thermometer, sticky notes and your house. You can invite two-to-three friends to join the game. The object of this game is to find the clue with the right negative temperature, and find the area where the negative temperature is located. Each person will create clues when his turn comes. You will vote on the order of each person to play. The chosen person will create clues and stick notes in creative places around the house. The clues should lead you to the location where the correct negative temperature is located. The rest of the group should go on a scavenger hunt to find the clues and see if the temperature is correct by using their thermometers. The first to find the clue with the correct temperature wins.

    Negative Flash Card Game

    • You can use four-by-six blank index cards to create a negative subtraction game. You will draw a negative sign on the upper-left side of the card and a positive sign on the upper-right side of the card. Draw more negative shapes or images than the positive side. You will then write out the answer on the back of the index card. The object of the game is for the answer to be a negative number.

    Online Games

    • The PBS Kids GO website has a game called "Cyber-Chase." The object of the game is to create a positive or negative number to fly the coupe. You can also play the "Integers Jeopardy Game" at Math-Play.Com. The categories are adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers. You can play as a single player or in teams.
