How to Do an Artifact Box

Artifacts are any item that was made or designed by a human. Presenting the class with an artifact box is a great hands-on way for students to learn about the past. You can view artifacts on-line or in books, but it is not the same as getting to touch them. Make an artifact box and get your students or children to learn about artifacts firsthand.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a theme for your artifacts box.

    • 2

Find artifacts around your home. If your lesson is about Native Americans, old jewelry, arrowheads or moccasins are good artifacts to use.

    • 3

Place the artifacts in a shoe box with a lid.

    • 4

Call on one student and give them a blindfold. Let the student touch the artifact and guess what it is. Repeat until all the artifacts are used.

    • 5

Open the artifacts box and pass it around the class. Let the students touch the items. Ask the students if they know the name of each item and what it was used for.

    • 6

Explain the actual item name and use to the students. Explain the importance of each artifact.

    • 7

Gather the artifacts back into the box and start with the lesson.
