Strategies to Use With Reading Fluency for Third Grade

Practice makes perfect. That is why your third-graders should practice reading more and more in order to become fluent readers. Your students should focus on what they read and pay attention to the different parts of speech. Establish this by reading aloud and using various strategies to help each student read clearly and fluently.
  1. Reading Self-Check Poster

    • You can write on a blank poster board three simple questions for your third-graders to ask themselves. You can write down: "Does each word in the sentence sound right?"; "Does the sentence look right?"; and "Do your words and sentence make sense?". You should post your poster in a spot that is visible to the students. While a student reads his own writing, he can stop and look at the board as a reminder.

    Monologue Reading

    • In theater, it is important to be able to read and pronounce each word fluently and to be able to remember your lines in a play. You can implement theater reading in your classroom to help your students become fluent readers and better speakers in front of the classroom. You will be able to critique each student's reading while she reads aloud. You can select a monologue from a TV show or movie for each student to read according to their personalities. This should help the students become interested in memorizing lines. Have each student practice at home and in class. When each student memorizes his lines, you can allow your students to dress up as their characters.

    Sing-Alongs & Videos

    • You can implement music or videos with singalongs in your classroom. Music stimulates the brain, according to Robin L. Brey, M.D., editor-in-chief of Neurology Now. You can use singalongs from videos such as "School House Rock: Reading Rock" and "Schoolhouse Rock: Grammar Classroom Edition." You can also use videos from Sesame Street such as "Sesame Street - Getting Ready to Read."

    Reading Online Games

    • You can help your third-graders improve their reading comprehension through online games. If a computer lab is available at your school, you can schedule a day for your classroom to play games such as PBS games.
