The Miracle Mail Project is designed like a touch-screen video game that allows students to participate in the parts of the postal system. The SMART Board screen displays brightly animated streets, complete with houses, lawns and mailboxes. Players control the actions of the on screen letter carrier by tapping one of the following options: mail box, mail carrier, letter, stamp, envelope and post office.
The Mail Delivery SMARTBoard activity resembles a rectangular board game and is handled in a similar manner. There are houses along each of the sides, along with mail carrier avatars positioned along the street that connects the houses. In addition, this activity adds math learning appropriate for children, ages 5 and 6. During the activity, children touch the board to identify where a mailman delivers mail next by paying attention to the sequence of numbers.
Animal Delivery is a simple activity that fuses life science concepts with basic concepts in mail delivery. The screen is filled with a variety of photos that represent animal habitats and students students must choose from an assortment of hand-written post cards that contain a picture of an animal. During the activity, students drag a post card selection to deliver it to the correct location.
Activities designed specifically for SMARTBoards aren't necessary to teach students about moving mail. Any activity that you can display on a computer screen can be used on a SMARTBoard to lead a group activity. For example, the Locations! Locations! worksheet allows you do display the PDF document so children can interact with the activity, which challenges you to find locations on a grid. Likewise, you can create a slideshow using common presentation software that allows students to practice mail moving concepts.
