Capital Letters & Lowercase Letters Activities

Students in preschool and kindergarten begin learning about the difference between capital and lowercase letters. To teach students about the two types of letters, teachers often use various letter activities. Activities like this are designed to make learning fun. When children are having fun, they might not even realize they are learning, even though they are, and they may be more interested in learning.
  1. Letter Books

    • Many teachers help students make letter books to learn about capital and lowercase letters. To do this activity, teachers give students a certain letter page each day at school. The first page might be the letter “A.” These types of activities are normally printouts of the capital and lowercase “A.” The pages also typically have a picture of something that starts with the letter. For example, the letter “A” page might have a picture of an apple. After the students complete a page for each letter, the teacher assembles the pages into a letter book.

    Matching Game

    • A common activity that students complete when learning about letters is through matching games. Matching games are generally worksheets that contains 10 or more capital letters on the left side of the page and the same number of lowercase letters on the right side of the page. The students must connect each capital letter to the correct lowercase letter by drawing a line from one to the other.

    Capital Letter Bingo

    • Teachers can make a bingo game to teach students about letters. The bingo game sheets should have boxes that contain a letter in each box. The letters should be a mixture of capital and lowercase letters. Each child receives a game sheet and the teacher calls out letters, stating whether it is capital or lowercase. Students mark their sheets when they have the letters the teacher calls out. When a student gets a “bingo,” the other students can continue the game until all students have a “bingo.” A “bingo” occurs when all letters in a row or column are marked.

    Memory

    • A memory game is an ideal activity to teach kids about capital and lowercase letters. To play this game you must make your own memory game. You can do this by cutting out small squares of paper, poster board or card stock. On each card write a letter of the alphabet in capital form. Make one card for every capital letter in the alphabet. Make a card for every lowercase letter as well. Mix up the cards and place them face down on a table. The goal of the game is to find the capital letter that matches the lowercase letter.
