Activities to Use in Teaching Students the Use of Capital Letters

When introducing children to the English language, it's important to teach them how to read and write capital and lowercase letters. Teach the rules of capitalization, such as capitalizing the beginning of each sentence or proper nouns. You can help your students understand this grammar concept using interactive lesson plans with books, poems and art.
  1. Correct the Mistakes

    • For this activity, your students will "learn from mistakes." Prepare five sentences that have incorrect capitalization. You can write these on the board or on a handout. Have your students work in small groups to correct the sentences with the proper capitalization. For this exercise, try out various ways to use capitalization, such as the beginning of a sentence, a title, proper nouns or days of the week. Have your students tally up how many mistakes are in each sentence.

Match the Capital and Lowercase Letters

    • Create a worksheet where all the lowercase and uppercase letters of the alphabet are scrambled. Have your students match up the lowercase and uppercase letters correctly. This will help your students recognize and identify the different letters of the alphabet. You can also use flashcards with capital letters and lowercase letters marked separately. Hand out these flashcards to your students and have them walk around the classroom to find their match.

    Draw Your Letters

    • For visual learners, have your students pick one letter and draw a picture beginning with that letter using both capital and lowercase letters. For instance, a student will write down "A" and "a" and draw an image of "Alaska" and "apple." This will show the usage of capitalization for proper nouns. You can hang these drawings around in your classroom or compile them in a classroom book as a reminder of the lesson.

    Reading and Marking

    • Pick a short picture book, poem or story and make copies of the passage. During story time, read the passage aloud. Then, have your students underline each capital letter that they see with a crayon or marker. Discuss why certain words begin with capitals. Ask them what they notice. Have your students find the main rules of capitalization, such as beginning each sentence with a capital letter. Write down what they've identified on the board.
