How to Calculate Where a Number Fits in a Range

A range in math is the difference in the spread between two numbers. People use ranges all the time, perhaps without knowing it; anytime you see the word "between" with two numbers you have a range; often when you see the word "to" with two numbers it is a range as well. For example "Cook at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes" has a range of 20-15 = 5 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the upper and lower numbers of the range. For example, if the range you are given is 15 to 20 minutes, write 15 and 20.

    • 2

Subtract the lower number from the higher number. In the example, 20-15 = 5.

    • 3

Subtract your number from the upper number. For example, if your number is 17, then 20-16 = 3.

    • 4

Divide the result in step 3 by the result in step 2. In the example, 3/5 = .6.

    • 5

Multiply by 100, this gives the percentile of your number in the range. In the example, .6 times 100 = 60; 17 is at the 60th percentile of the range 15 to 20.
