How to Determine Benefits of Advanced Placement Courses

Advanced Placement, or AP, courses give high school students a head start to college. Thirty-seven courses are offered in math, sciences, history, the humanities and more. AP courses are available to those students who are looking for a challenge and want to get ahead in a prospective major. Determine whether AP courses will be beneficial to you.

Instructions

    • 1

Figure out your favorite subject. Determine whether you want to further explore math, biology, humanities or English. If you're interested in majoring in one or more of these areas in college, and might want to pursue a career in one of the above-mentioned subjects, AP courses allow you to broaden your educational horizons since you study certain subjects in more detail.

    • 2

Give yourself a challenge by adding AP courses to your schedule. You can develop or improve your study skills by tackling the rigorous coursework involved. AP courses require you to do a lot of reading, writing, researching and analyzing. You can also study independently as well as with other students in a smaller class setting.

    • 3

Improve your chances of getting into college. AP courses stand out on your college applications because you show a commitment to hard work and academic excellence. This shows some colleges that you are mature enough to handle the responsibilities that come with college coursework.

    • 4

Advance yourself in college. Earn AP college credit while you're still in high school and apply it to your college general education requirements. You may be able to get ahead so that you can graduate from college early.

    • 5

Save money. You may not be required to take certain classes in college if you take the AP courses in high school. If you can skip some classes in college, then you save some tuition money each semester.
