How to Calculate the Average Power of a Sine Wave

The average power of the sine wave is the mean of its amplitude over its domain. This calculation is often introduced in trigonometry to relate the changes in trigonometric amplitude to their graphs. All cyclic processes have an amplitude characteristic of their design. The most common applications of this process are in electrical engineering where the design of generators and their accompanying electrical waveforms are of great importance. This calculation also has common use in the field of harmonics.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the amplitude of the sine function being evaluated. The amplitude of the sine function is written as a multiplier directly before the function. For example, the function 3*sin (x) has an amplitude of three.

    • 2

Square the amplitude of the function.

    • 3

Divide the squared value by two. The resulting quotient is the average power of the sine function.
