Activities for Quilts for Preschoolers

Many parents of preschoolers teach their children at home for years before they enroll them in school. The parents teach their children about colors, shapes, numbers, nature and a list of other basic knowledge. Quilt designs seem almost tailor-made for these learning experiences. Use actual quilts or print out drawings of patterns to teach a variety of subjects to your preschool children.
  1. Learning Colors

    • Print out outline drawings of a complicated quilt pattern such as Carpenter's Wheel or Birds in the Air. Number each individual section in the pattern, placing the same number in each space that will have the same color. Tell your child to color all the number one spaces blue, the number two spaces red and so on. See if she gets the right colors in each spot to draw the correct design.

    Attention to Detail

    • Make an I Spy quilt or print out pictures of I Spy quilts for your child. I Spy quilts are made of squares with different fabrics, with each fabric showing a different animal, insect or object. Spread out the quilt or pictures and make a game of having him find the dogs, the moons or the ladybugs.

    Shapes

    • Cut out squares, rectangles and triangles from different colors of poster board. Create a hollow poster board frame that is big enough to hold a number of the cut-out shapes. Show your child how to fit triangles together to make a square, squares together to make a rectangle and how all of them can fit together into a larger square.

    Doll Quilt

    • Cut out a muslin rectangle that measures 18 by 24 inches. Cut out a number of 2 by 2 inch squares, each one from a different scrap of fabric. Give your child the fabric base, the scrap squares and a glue stick. Allow her to design her own quilt and put it together, gluing the squares onto the rectangle. After the glue dries, she will have her own patchwork quilt for a doll or for hanging on the wall in her room. For a more permanent design, lay fusible web between the backing and the squares, then iron the entire quilt to fuse it together.
