Talk to your toddler as he is being looked after. While you clean him, change him and eat with him, talk about your day, what you plan to do and who you will see. Talking to your toddler as much as possible allows him to recognize how the language is used and how to use it himself. Speak to your toddler in a clear and concise way, while reacting and responding to all of his efforts to communicate back.
Reading to your child is an effective way to teach him language. Pick out simple children's books with colors and illustrations. As you read, ask your toddler questions relating to the book, such as "What is this?" and "Who does that belong to?"
Sing with your toddler. Songs and nursery rhymes are both fun and effective ways to develop a toddler's language skills. Reciting a song with your toddler is a good way for him to pick up on the rhythm and patterns of speech, while the repetition helps him memorize words.
Watch television with your toddler. The TV can act as a highly valuable tool in language development. Talk to your child about what you are watching, ask him questions and talk about the characters, listen to conversations taking place on screen.
Take your toddler on walks and outings. Walking around the park and making observations with your child helps him learn and understand a variety of new words and interesting word combinations. Talk about the green leaves, rough bark, feathery birds and prickly bushes.
