Lesson to Teach Letter Sounds to Pre-K

Pre-K is the first classroom-based learning environment in a child's life. It exists as a way to help prepare children for kindergarten. At this point, kids start to build up a knowledge of letter and sound recognition. Certain activities revolving around letter sounds and the alphabet can be performed to give pre-K students a head start in their reading development.
  1. Alphabet Scrapbook

    • Help students master letter sounds with the use of a scrapbook. Provide pre-K students with their own scrapbooks and dedicate a page to every letter in the alphabet. Page "A" should be made up of drawings, pictures and stickers of things that begin with the letter A, such as apples, aardvarks and angels. Kids should illustrate their scrapbooks. Help students gather scrapbook material from magazines, newspapers and comic books.

    Sound Bingo

    • "Sound bingo" is a fun and educational game to play with the kids. Design enough cards and bring in enough felt-tip pens for the class. Cut the cards out of construction paper. Include several different boxes, each with a different letter sound contained within. Every card should contain a different selection of letter sounds. Distribute both to every member of the class. Then, call out a series of letter sounds. Have the kids color in the box containing the sound that you make, providing they have the letter of the sound on their bingo card. The first kid to cross out the whole card shouts "bingo!"

    Alphabet Song

    • Reciting the alphabet once or twice a day is important for pre-K students. Reciting the letters in song is an enjoyable way to instill it in their minds. Place an alphabet strip that displays each letter in a visible spot in the classroom. Recite the song with the children and encourage each child to use the order of letters presented on the strip as a guide.

    I Spy

    • Play "I Spy" with the kids. Pick out an object and tell the students the sound it starts with. If you have spotted a book, say "I spy with my little eye something beginning with B." The class should look around and call out what it might be. After a few rounds, allocate particular kids to find objects and tell the others the beginning sound.
