Making a papier-mache globe teaches children about the locations of countries and continents around the world. To make a papier-mache globe, each child should have one large balloon, newspaper strips and a bowl that contains a mixture of 1 part flour and 2 parts water. After the balloon has been inflated and tied off, the strips of newspaper should be dipped into the flour mixture. Children should place the strips of coated newspaper onto the balloon, smoothing them out. Continue adding strips of newspaper until the balloon has three to four coats. Hand the balloon upside-down to let it dry completely. Once dry, pop each balloon with a pin, leaving behind a papier-mache sphere. The children can paint the sphere to look like a globe. Place a globe where the children can easily see it to allow them to recreate the globe on their papier-mache spheres.
Making a place mat that displays different countries can help children learn the names of the other countries of the world while eating a meal. To make a countries place mat, each child will need an 18- by 12-inch piece of paper board, markers and cut-outs of different countries. Have children can trace around the countries onto the place mats, Write the name of the corresponding country onto the shape. Once finished, take the place mats to your local library to have them laminated or them yourself using clear contact paper.
Children love to hang up their artwork, so have them create a mobile of national flags to hang. Each child will need five to six index cards, markers or crayons, a hole punch, string, a book displaying national flags and a 12-inch-long dowel. On each index card, have the children color in the designs of the flags they like best on one side. Write the name of the corresponding countries on the other side. Punch a hole in the top of each card and tie a string onto it. Attach the other end of the string to the dowel, placing each string around 2 inches apart. The children can hang the national flags mobile in a place where they can look at it often.
