Community Helper's Science Activities for Kindergarten

Kindergartners require experiential science activities that will allow them get their hands into the projects that they are learning about. When teaching kindergartners about helping out in their community in a scientific way, it is important to provide them with ways to actively participate in their lessons.
  1. Planting a Tree

    • Planting a tree can help bring green to urban areas, and can teach young children that humans have a responsibility to take care of the Earth. To plant a 2-ft. tree with kindergartners, dig out a hole in the ground that is 2-ft. deep and 2-ft. wide. Pour around 2-lbs. of compost into the hole, and spread it around. Place the tree root ball into the hole, and cut off any ties with gardening shears. Hold the tree in place as you cover the root ball with soil. Pat down the soil around the tree, and water it thoroughly.

    Recycling

    • Recycling turns waste into usable materials. Kindergartners can learn that they can help the Earth by collecting containers and materials to be recycled. Instruct students to look for materials that can be taken to recycling centers. These products include plastic bottles, cardboard, glass containers and jars, tin or steel food cans, aluminum soda cans, old printing paper, magazines and newspapers. Once they have collected the materials, you can take the students on a tour of a recycling center to deliver the recyclables and to see how the waste gets recycled.

    Feed the Birds

    • Feeding wild birds helps provide nourishment to creatures that have a diminishing environment. You can create a bird feeder using basic materials that can be found around a house or classroom. Wash out a quart-sized container of milk, and allow it to dry completely. Cut a 4-inch square out of one side of the carton, and fill the bottom with bird seeds. Poke two holes in the top of the container, and thread twine through the holes. Tie the ends of the twine together to make a loop, then hang up the bird feeder on a tree branch by the twine loop.
