How to Create a Homeschool Curriculum in Georgia with AKS

The decision to homeschool your child is a very personal one, whether for religious or other reasons. When making the choice to homeschool, it will be necessary for you to choose a homeschooling curriculum that both you and your child are comfortable with. Often, it is possible to teach at home the same curriculum that is being used in your neighborhood school. Using similar curriculum ensures that your child is learning the same materials as his peers who are attending public school.

  Obtain the Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) booklet for your child's grade level from the Gwinnett County Public Schools website. The AKS is closely aligned with the standardized tests that are used in the state of Georgia, such as the ITBS, SAT and ACT as well as the Georgia Performance Standards.

  Read through the AKS materials. Highlight the areas that you would like to explore in your own homeschool curriculum. It may also be wise to gather the testing materials used in the state of Georgia for comparison.

  Review different homeschooling curriculum online. An online search engine should be able to point you in the right direction. Ask other homeschooling parents for their recommendations for curriculum. Read through all the homeschooling materials before making an informed choice.
