Homeschool Recommended Literature Books

Homeschooling is a method of eduction for children in which a parent or private tutor educates the child at home instead of in a traditional school environment. If you are dissatisfied with your child's curriculum in a formal school setting or want to incorporate, or remove, topics from your child's education, homeschooling may be an option to consider. If you decide to homeschool, there are many resources available that can guide you through planning the curriculum that you want your children to learn. Homeschool-Curriculum.org is an organization decided to helping parents find resources for homeschooling their children. The organization also offers suggested reading lists for various grade levels.
  1. 5th Grade

    • Homeschool-Curriculum.org recommends books in several subject reading lists. For homeschool students at the 5th-grade level, the site recommends historical fiction such as "Number the Stars," by Lois Lowry; "Sarah, Plain, and Tall," by Patricia MacLachlan; and "Sign of the Beaver," by Elizabeth Speare. Recommended literature in general fiction includes the "Chronicles of Narnia," by C.S. Lewis and "Fight for Freedom," by Norma Jean Lutz.

    6th Grade

    • In their biography section for 6th grade, Homeschool-Curriculum.org recommends "Margaret Bourke-White: Racing with a Dream," by Catherine A.. Welch and "Secret Soldier: The Story of Deborah Sampson," by Ann McGovern. Other books that you may want your child to read are "My Brother Sam Is Dead," by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier and "Sounder," by William H. Armstrong.

    7th Grade

    • Recommended biographies from the 7th grade reading list include "Diary of a Young Girl," by Anne Frank and "The Defenders," by Ann McGovern. Other fiction books your child can enjoy include "Black Pearl," by Scott O'Dell and "Call It Courage," by Armstrong Sperry.

    8th Grade

    • "Invincible Louisa, the Story of the Author of Little Women," by Cornelia Meigs and "J.R.R. Tolkien: The Man Who Created The Lord of the Rings," by Michael Coren, are some biographies recommended if you are homeschooling your child. Fiction recommendations include "Jacob Have I Loved," by Katherine Paterson and "Kidnapped," by Robert Louis Stevenson.

    HIgh School Level

    • If you are homeschooling a child in high school, some recommended literature selections are "1984," by George Orwell; "The Great Gatsby," by F.Scott Fitzgerald; and "Death of a Salesman," by Authur Miller.

    Classic Children's Tales

    • Homeschool-Curriculum.org also has a list of recommenced children's tales, appropriate for any age, but especially for grades 2-5. Some of these selections include "The Nutcracker Ballet," retold by Deborah Hautig; "Paul Bunyan," retold and illustrated by Steven Kellogg; "Pecos Bill," retold and illustrated by Steven Kellogg; and "Rapunzel," by the Brothers Grimm.
