About Homeschooling Supplies

Parents homeschool for a variety of reasons. It may be a decision based on religious beliefs, or a desire to provide a higher level of education for their children. Some parents are forced to homeschool children due to illnesses or because of a travel or family emergency. Just like traditional school teacher, the homeschooling parent needs to assemble adequate supplies.
  1. Free

    • In some instances homeschooling supplies, such as text books, will be provided by a school district. Typically this involves a situation where the child is unable to attend the public school and must be taught at home, while the school district supplies the parent with the curriculum and guidance. Another scenario would be a family who must be away from their home for an extended period and ia unable to attend school.

    Basic

    • Some supplies are not age or subject specific to the student. They are educational supplies or reference materials suitable for any grade level and should be available in the homeschool classroom. These would include a dictionary, thesaurus, globe, atlas, map of the world and the United States, set of encyclopedias, crayons, colored pens and pencils, scissors, journal books, paper, glue stick, graph paper, dice, dominoes, playing cards, ruler, yardstick and measuring tape. The dice, playing cards and dominoes can be used in math games or math instruction. For the family unable to afford the encyclopedias, a library card and frequent trips to the library would be a good substitute.

    Shopping

    • Homeschooling supplies and textbooks can be purchased from various sources. Parents can shop at traditional education supply stores. Online stores designed specifically for homeshooling parents are available, as are online stores for professional teachers. Homeschooling organizations might supply resources. Garage sales and discount stores can provide an affordable opportunity to pick up school supplies, such as paper, globes or craft supplies.

    Computer

    • Home computers with an Internet connection can be a valuable homeschool resource. Download Google Earth for free and the homeschooler can learn geography and the stars. Use educational software to teach the student a second language or typing. You can also go online to tour the White House or visit a museum.

    Kitchen

    • There are already homeshool supplies available in most kitchens. Supplies include measuring cups and spoons, kitchen scales, clocks, timers, and packaging that is pre-marked with its volume. Math, science and chemistry can be taught in the kitchen, using what is typically already available. Baking a homemade pie and dividing it into equal pieces is a delicious way to teach fractions.

    Equipment

    • Over time other items can be added to the schoolroom. Educational equipment can include a microscope, telescope, aquarium, calculator and musical instruments. Board games should also be available to the homeschooler. Choose games suitable for the chilren's age, interests and educational goals.
